Chapter 1 — The Maid in the Lobby

The Grand Alcazar was one of those hotels designed to make money look tasteful.

No gold statues. No vulgar displays.

Just polished black onyx, Baccarat chandeliers, hand-cut flowers, and staff trained to remember a guest’s name before the guest remembered theirs.

Julian Rossi had stayed there dozens of times.

That evening, nothing about the lobby should have surprised him.

Then a housekeeper spoke.

“Good evening, sir. Do you require fresh linens or assistance with your baggage?”

Julian stopped walking.

Camila nearly collided with him.

“What is it?”

He didn’t answer.

Eight months.

For eight months, Julian had imagined Elena’s voice in empty rooms.

He turned.

She stood beside a brass housekeeping cart.

Gray uniform.

Hair twisted into a careless knot.

Hands reddened from chemicals.

And beneath the loose fabric of her uniform was a pregnancy impossible to mistake.

“Elena.”

Her fingers tightened around the cart.

For half a second, something shattered across her face.

Then it vanished.

“Good evening, Mr. Rossi.”

Mr. Rossi.

Camila stared at her.

“Do you know this maid?”

“She’s my wife.”

The sentence came out before Julian thought about it.

Conversation around them faded.

Elena looked toward Camila.

Emerald evening gown. Diamond bracelet. Her hand still resting on Julian’s arm.

Something cold entered Elena’s eyes.

“Your suite is prepared on the twenty-third floor.”

Julian stepped closer.

“What are you doing here?”

“I’m working.”

“Where have you been?”

She laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

“You’re asking me?”

“Yes.”

“You told me to leave.”

Julian stared at her.

“What?”

“You had security remove my access from the house. You froze my cards. You told me that if I contacted you again, your attorneys would file immediately.”

“I did none of that.”

Elena’s face changed.

Only slightly.

Then she shook her head.

“I am not doing this here.”

She pushed the cart.

Julian caught the handle.

Not her.

The cart.

“That child.”

Elena went still.

“When?”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Seven months.”

Julian felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Eight months earlier, Elena had vanished.

Seven months pregnant meant she had conceived before leaving.

Possibly weeks before.

His child.

Camila tugged his sleeve.

“Julian, this is obviously some kind of performance.”

Elena looked at her.

Then back at him.

“So that’s Camila.”

Julian frowned.

“You know her?”

Elena said nothing.

But Camila’s face had lost its color.

That was the first thing Julian noticed.

The second was the old phone Elena pulled from her pocket.

“I kept everything,” she said.

She opened a message.

Julian read it.

Leave the house tonight. Do not embarrass us by making this harder. Security has instructions not to let you back in.

The message had come from one of Julian’s private numbers.

A line used only by him and three members of his executive household.

Julian looked up.

“I never sent this.”

Elena’s voice trembled.

“Then somebody wanted me to believe you did.”
